The Origins of 'Jump the Shark'

The expression "Jump the shark" refers to when a show has passed its prime. It came from an episode of Happy Days where Fonzie literally jumps over a shark while water-skiing:

I'm only mentioning it here because when I heard it was from Happy Days, I was like, "No way. I can't picture the Fonze water-skiing, let alone jumping over a shark." But he did, and here's the proof, and henceforth Happy Days began to suck.

I really like the phrase "Jumped The Shark." But let's face it, "Happy Days" ALWAYS "sucked."

But is it possible that Adam West's encounter with a rubber shark in "BATMAN: The Movie" (1966) may have also spelled the beginning of the end for TV's "Batman"? Sure, with the help of his "Shark-repellant Batspray" he did manage to survive the attack. But with Lee Meriwether replacing the ultra-hot Julie Newmar in the role of Catwoman, it's clear that the Caped Crusader was in deep water.

Although Newmar did return in the Catwoman role during the second season, by the beginning of the third year, she was replaced by Eartha Kitt, the silly Batgirl character was added, and it was obviously "Curtains for the Caped Crusader and his Boy Wonder" (i.e., the show "sucked.")

I think maybe the old theatre adage needs to be updated to: "Never appear with children, animals or SHARKS."

Oh well, just some random thoughts here. Color me outta here; I'm going out now for sushi. (That's odd: I NEVER eat sushi!)

I hate to pull a bitch move and disagree, but NO, Happy Days was cool for awhile. Seriously. It was. I even almost bought hotpants.

Oh wait, I'm thinking about Grease.

And while I sympathize with the "Never appear with children, animals or SHARKS" update, notable exceptions come to mind:

- Jaws
- Lassie
- Shirley Temple's career as a Baby Burlesque. (Did you ever see the one where boys vie for her love with varying sizes of lollipop? She's, like, 3!)

Ha! No, I don't think I ever saw that one... and I'm pretty sure that if I saw it, I'd REMEMBER it!

But speaking of Shirley Temple, I'm reminded of one of my favorite anecdotes. Shirley Temple said:

"I stopped believing in Santa Claus when my Mother took me to see him in a department store and he asked for my autograph."

Shirley didn't say whether or not this started a competition for her affection between department store Santas, each bringing her a larger candy cane.
