sadly, humans seem to overlook inconvenient potential/inevitable large scale problems until it is too late and just carry on regardless; see oil rising from cracks in seabed floor near BP's deepwater rig, fracking etc. for other examples of our own moronic stupidity in the quest for 'profit'.
